Newcastle is (probably) the most wild and atmospheric city in the North East (Sunderland locals might not agree), with one of the most recognisable British accents. Geordies are renowned for their party spirit and friendly natures, so you can guarantee your hen party will receive a warm welcome. With its stunning quayside, plethora of quirky bars and restaurants and tons of hen activities, we highly recommend choosing Newcastle as your hen destination.
Get ready for the hen adventure of a lifetime in this North Eastern capital, the Geordies really know how to party and with so many activities to choose from, you may well need a holiday when you get home to recover from all of the unadulterated fun you will have!

Party capital
This is one of our most popular UK hen destinations for good reason, Newcastle is a really lively and cosmopolitan city with so much to offer any hen party
Wherever you're coming from, Newcastle is an easy city to access thanks to Newcastle Central Station being well connected and as the name suggests, very central in the city. If you're coming up from London, you could reach Newcastle in just 2 hours and 50 minutes via the direct LNER service, now that's swift considering the distance. You can also get a direct train from Edinburgh, York and Leeds.
The majority of groups want to stay somewhere central, meaning you shouldn't have a far walk from the station to your hotel, but we can verify this with you before booking.
If someone is coming from a bit further afield, Newcastle International Airport has its own Metro Station and it will only take around 25 minutes to reach Central Station, operating from around 5:30am and up until midnight, albeit they do start later on a Sunday.
So we can help you with accommodation in the centre and if you've arrived by train, this really does mean most activities are walkable, whether that's restaurants, nightclubs or daytime activities, however the outdoor ones are occasionally on the outskirts. If you do plan on walking around, it's worth noting that not everywhere is flat, so it can be worth packing some sturdy shoes for the daytime, as you may have to tackle the occasional hill, we wouldn't fancy that in heels.
It's worth planning out which bars or restaurants you want to visit and making a route so that it naturally flows. We can also help by booking you into bars and restaurants, as well as nightclubs, so you don't have to worry about paying for entry, food or drinks when you arrive.
The Tyne and Wear Metro might not be needed if you're central, but if you've opted for somewhere a bit further out, such as if you wanted a big hen house in the country rather than a central hotel, then this metro service can be quite useful. This will also prove useful if you want to visit Gateshead, or if you fancy heading to the coast.
As with most cities in the UK, there is a decent bus network that will take you on most routes you might need, while you can purchase an integrated day ticket, which will cover multiple forms of transport.
You can book a black cab or Hackney carriage, while if you're interested in a private transfer, then send us a message as we can arrange this for you. Uber also operates in Newcastle, so if you already have the app loaded, this can be an easy solution if you want to go somewhere that's not walkable, or just don't fancy walking home late at night. There are a number of taxi ranks around the city centre, just make sure to always use licensed vehicles or pre-booked ones.
There are many different areas to explore in Newcastle, and you will soon realise why the city is dubbed the party capital of the North East! The locals are all really friendly so expect to be given recommendations wherever you go, but here are a few to get you started on your hen adventure!
Newcastle Castle
Don't worry, you don't have to travel far, as it's right in the city centre and close to the Central Station, so you could even do this on day 1, or wait until the hangover day and then explore during the morning. Nowadays it's really the Castle Keep and Black Gate that has survived the test of time. The Black Gate was actually added in during Henry III's reign, while you can get a tour guide who can walk you through the history of the castle, if that interests the bride.
But the real reason we wanted to highlight this activity is that you can get views all across the city, making for some nice group photos and just a generally nice experience during the day time. You will only need to dedicate a couple of hours to exploring and sightseeing and being so central, you can quickly reach your next activity or landmark.
Grainger Market
We love a market here at HPD! Opening back in 1835, most of what you'll find is food stands, but you will also spot people selling crafts, clothes, jewellery and even plants. It's always fun to look out for a bargain, while you can turn this into a fun hen activity, where everyone pulls a name out of a hat and you have to buy that person 1 thing to wear later on that evening (writing this from experience).
You also don't have to worry about the rain, as the market area is actually covered. As this market is in the city centre, again you don't have a long journey to wherever else you want to go.
Jesmond Dene
If the bride loves being outside and hiking then this might be a really fun alternative activity that you haven't thought of. The ancient woodland has some great hiking routes alongside the river Ouseburn. You'll even spot a waterfall, while this area has been open to the public since 1884 and has a huge amount of wildlife you should keep an eye out for, such as really cute otters. In fact, if she's an animal lover, then you could visit Pets' Corner, where you can see pigs, goats, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Not all brides want to go straight to the drinking part of the day, so if she seems like someone who would prefer making the most of the day first, this can be a really nice alternative option.
St James' Park
Not everyone is going to be a football fan, so this is a bit of a Marmite suggestion, but if the bride does like football then she might want to consider a stadium tour (who knows, you might see a few of the lads in skimpy shorts). They even have a rooftop tour which is really cool, taking you 150 feet above ground and with panoramic views of Newcastle and Tyneside. Plus when it comes time to have a drink or some food, you can head to Shearer's Bar, named after the Newcastle legend.
Tynemouth
We previously mentioned the Metro under 'getting around', well you can use the metro to visit Tynemouth if you fancy a day trip to the coast. While Newcastle will offer the wild evening with bars and clubs, Tynemouth will offer a drastically different daytime experience, with beaches, cafes and independent shops. If you do make the trip, you might want to head to King Edward's Bay, a nice little beach area, as well as Longsands which is sandy.
The Gate
An entertainment complex with a difference. Expect to find everything here from axe throwing and bottomless brunch, to live music, food and cinema. This all weather venue is definitely one for your hen hitlist.
The Geordies love to party, so you and the girls will be in excellent company on your nights out during your hen party weekend. There are bars and clubs of every variety to choose from and deciding where to go can be a minefield to say the least! We have compiled a list for you to provide a party starting point!
The Diamond Strip & Collingwood Street
This aptly named area is found near Central Station, while it's known for having bars and nightclubs that stay open late, meaning it gets a bit crazy at night. There are also a good few cocktail bars, perfect if you want to enjoy a tasty drink to celebrate the hen weekend in Newcastle. This certainly isn't your area for a traditional pub, this is a bit more of a dressed up area, so ideal for the evening.
The Bigg Market & High Bridge
A younger crowd flocks here every weekend and you can expect to find cheap drinks, dancing (on tables) and an extremely lively atmosphere. The area is also home to Newcastle's oldest pub, The Old George which dates back to 1582! Definitely worth a visit to sip a pint and stand on the hallowed ground of many Geordies before you.
It's also very central, so if you want to head on somewhere else afterwards then that isn't an issue. A lot of the venues are within a very short walking distance of each other, so this can easily become a pub/bar crawl. You also don't have a long journey to Diamond Strip or High Bridge.
Grey and Dean Streets
This area is popular with hen groups when it comes to lunch time or dinner, as there are some really nice restaurants. But it's also ideal for cocktail bars and pubs, so you can combine the two. Your pub crawl will naturally go towards Quayside, which is a downhill route. Showcasing a long strip of bars, restaurants and cool shops that run from the monument to the Quayside, this is the ideal place for a bar crawl.
The Quayside
The Quayside is an integral part of Newcastle's rich trading history, and now home to a modern cafe and bar culture. There’s also live theatre and a thriving Sunday market to explore as well as picturesque riverside walks with views of the bridges.
Another great spot to stop for dinner in a nice restaurant, it's also just a short walk afterwards to get to Dean Street or Grey Street.
Jesmond & Osborne Road
This student heavy area is filled with upscale bars and happy hour deals galore! Jesmond is one of the more affluent areas of the city. This is outside the city centre, so it tends to mainly prove popular for hen groups who have accommodation in this area. You will find many of the bars are almost next door to each other, while there are some that offer bottomless brunch and other fun drinking activities during the day.
Ouseburn
This is where music fans might want to flock, as you'll find bars with live music, however you may have to book tickets in advance depending on who is playing. There are also a number of independent bars, which are always nice to support. If the group is less keen on getting all dressed up to the Ritz and would rather something a bit 'alternative' then this is a great option. This is also great for groups that do actually enjoy visiting a pub over a cocktail bar.
The Pink Triangle
Newcastle’s LGBTQ+ scene is thriving and the liveliest bars are located around Times Square and Scotswood Road, also known as the Pink Triangle or the gay village. Many of the bars will have fun events which they'll list on their websites, from drag shows to bingo and brunches, while some will stay open late. Please ensure you contact the venues directly if you plan on visiting as a large group.
Newcastle is a city for foodies with award winning fine-dining and seafood restaurants galore, coupled with the standard high street chains, you and the girls and guaranteed to find something to tickle your tastebuds and your budget. You can book a restaurant package through us, all you need to do is choose the cuisine and save yourself the hassle of deciding where to go as a large group on arrival! One click is all it takes, check the activity page for more information.
Is the pope Catholic? Newcastle is easy to walk around, with most groups arriving by train which lands you right in the city centre, with bars, restaurants and hotels nearby. Many argue it has the best nightlife scene in the country, staying open late and with so many venues to pick from. There are also some great and unique hen activities you can choose for your weekend.
Yes is the short answer. Although the weather is better during the summer months (obvs) it is always advisable to wear layers and keep an eye on your weather app. Real Geordies don’t wear coats on nights out even in the middle of winter, so maybe throw caution to the wind (literally) and go native! A waterproof jacket is a useful addition to any hen party packing guide.
Usually 2-3 days, over the weekend. However, Newcastle is the city that parties all week. You can expect to find stuff to do and events to attend every night, so you don’t need to necessarily confine your hen do to Friday and Saturday.
